21 Killed in Fighting Between Army, Rebels
At least 21 people died in three days of fighting in a suburb near Burundi’s capital between the nation’s last remaining Hutu rebel group and the army, military and local officials said.
Calm returned to Kabezi district, south of Bujumbura, for the first time since Tuesday, when the army attacked rebels of the National Liberation Forces in an effort to dislodge them from a stronghold.
At least 27,000 civilians fled.
The army said 20 rebels and one soldier were killed, but rebel spokesman Pasteur Habimana said both sides suffered “big losses.”
