Punk in a rock pie

The Rolling Blackouts sound as if somebody stuck punk firecrackers in a classic-rock pie. The South Bay foursome’s agitated riffage with bluesy underpinnings reflects its members’ admiration of structure-bending acts such as Sonic Youth and the Birthday Party. “We all grew up on punk rock, and we certainly have the punk ethic,” says singer-guitarist Danny Holden, 24. “But we like stuff that has a different angle, musicians that took [styles] and put ‘em in a blender.” Live shows, such as the band’s Monday night residency this month at Spaceland, helped the band earn a deal with the Record Collection, the label that’s home to the Walkmen and Har Mar Superstar. Holden’s looking forward to summer, when their debut album comes out and he and bandmates Gabe Garnica, Jarrod Stiles and Mike Peralta perform on an East Coast leg of the Warped Tour. “We did a skate tour thing last year where we were playing in a parking lot next to a Dumpster to 14 kids,” he says. “We’re still growing.”

Frolicking good time

The Lovemakers are about to close a deal with Interscope Records. Now can everybody put their clothes back on? Sorry, just kidding. But such frolicking would hardly be surprising from the Oakland trio, given the propensity for leading couple Scott Blonde and Lisa Light to canoodle in their skivvies onstage. “It’s not an act; it’s what we do,” Blonde says. “The whole attitude is a backlash ... [to] the indie rock scene -- where the lyrics are not fun, the music is not fun, the shows are not fun.” The Lovemakers’ languorous synth-pop stylings, with dance-y beats laid down by Jason Proctor, started to find an audience in L.A. after some exposure on KXLU-FM (88.9) and promoter Scott Sterling brought them to the Fold in January. Tonight the trio help Sterling celebrate seven years of the Fold, joining stalwarts the Vacation, Dengue Fever, Giant Drag and John Gold at the El Rey Theatre.

Fast forward

Contrary to what was announced last week, Fold favorites and part-time L.A. denizens Metric will not appear with the Stills in June. So catch Metric as headliner Friday at the El Rey Theatre.... The Prids, a dark-wave foursome from Portland, Ore., whose impressive debut “Love Zero” recalls ‘80s-era ethereal guitar bands, finishes a series of local shows tonight at the Smell in downtown L.A.... More from Portland: The dream-pop husband/wife duo Viva Voce bring their fetching psychedelia to the Silverlake Lounge on Tuesday.... Pop guru Jason Falkner charmed his way through a show last week at the Troubadour during which he was backed by only his iPod. “I’ve found three other Jason Falkners,” he said, holding up the device, which hiccuped during one number.... The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund benefit on Monday at the Troubadour features a heavyweight lineup: Michelle Shocked, Michael Penn, Jim Lauderdale, Peter Himmelman and Grant Lee Phillips.
