A straight-A student claims she got a C she didn’t deserve -- and she’s taking the district to federal court to try to prove it.
Brandy Hurd is a top athlete in her eighth-grade class in the Island Union Elementary School District. She got a C in a physical education class from a temporary teacher that Hurd’s parents said discriminated against their daughter. Her father, Ivan Hurd, said they asked the district to change the grade, and their request was denied.
He filed a complaint in federal court in Fresno alleging that the teacher, Julie Hansen, discriminated against his daughter, who is black. The complaint asks for a grade change and unspecified financial damages.
