Pleasant detour to Fanning Island

Regarding “A Hawaiian Cruise, Detour Not Required” [On a Budget, April 4]: My husband and I are experienced cruisers, and we recently cruised round-trip from Los Angeles to Tahiti and Hawaii. We were supposed to visit Christmas Island, but because of another ship’s schedule, they rerouted us to Fanning Island.
No one, including the captain, had ever been there. To our surprise, it was a beautiful, unspoiled island, with shy natives, a crafts market (all handmade wares) and the most beautiful waters I have ever seen.
Tourism has not spoiled this island, and there is something to be said for that. If shopping, high-rise hotels, restaurants and T-shirt shops are what you are looking for, Fanning Island will not please you.
We’re under the impression that traveling is about experiencing new and different places. Fanning Island is just that.
