Chen Calls ‘One China’ Policy a Political Myth
Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian called Beijing’s “one China” policy a political myth and said he would not be deterred from drawing up a new constitution for the island.
Chen plans to put the constitution to a national vote in 2006 and implement it in 2008. He denies that the reforms have anything to do with independence for the island, despite China’s complaints that they do.
Beijing views Taiwan as a rebel province.
“ ‘One China’ is a political myth created by the Communist Chinese regime to consolidate its autocratic empire,” Chen said in televised remarks.
