U.S. video game hardware and software sales fell 1% in the first quarter of 2004 compared with a year earlier, largely because of a sharp decline in console sales, market research firm NPD Group Inc. said.

Total U.S. retail sales were $1.8 billion, down from $1.9 billion a year earlier, NPD said.

Console hardware sales fell to $336 million from $445 million in the same quarter last year, while sales of software for hand-held games fell to $157 million from $167 million.
