Bonds Keeps Homer Streak Alive in Loss

Barry Bonds homered in his seventh consecutive game, but the San Francisco Giants lost, 9-5, to the visiting San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

Bonds is one shy of matching the major league record for consecutive games with a homer -- shared by Dale Long (1956), Don Mattingly (1987) and Ken Griffey Jr. (1993).

Bonds has homered in the last seven games in which he has had an at-bat. He had a pinch-hit walk last Wednesday, which does not stop the streak under baseball’s rules.

His ninth homer of the season, a two-run shot against Brian Lawrence, bounced into McCovey Cove and a fan dived over the railing and into the murky water to retrieve it. The homer cut the Giant deficit to 6-2 and was the 667th of his career. Pedro Feliz connected two batters later.

Bonds homered in six consecutive games twice during the 2001 season, when he set the season record of 73 homers.

Brian Giles hit a two-run homer and Sean Burroughs had two doubles among his four hits and drove in two runs for San Diego.

Milwaukee 4, Arizona 2 -- Lyle Overbay and Junior Spivey, two of the six players the Brewers got from Arizona for Richie Sexson, each had three hits in the victory at Milwaukee.

Sexson went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.

Arizona second baseman Roberto Alomar broke a bone in his right hand and left after being hit by a pitch from Ben Sheets.

Montreal 2, New York 1 -- Jose Vidro led off the eighth inning at New York with a tiebreaking home run and the Expos ended an eight-game losing streak.

Cincinnati 3, Atlanta 2 -- Barry Larkin singled home two runs -- his first runs batted in since opening day -- and the Reds rallied at Cincinnati.

Chicago 9, Pittsburgh 1 -- Alex Gonzalez homered, doubled and drove in four runs at Pittsburgh, and the Cubs hit Ryan Vogelsong hard for the second time in a week.

St. Louis 5, Houston 3 -- Reggie Sanders homered in the third inning and snatched away a Jeff Bagwell shot at the right-field wall in the fifth to lead the Cardinals at Houston.

Florida 3, Philadelphia 1 -- Dontrelle Willis gave up an unearned run in 6 2/3 innings at Philadelphia to lead the Marlins to their 11th consecutive victory over the Phillies.
