Leo C. O’Neill, 64; Former President of Standard & Poor’s

Leo C. O’Neill, 64, the recently retired president of Standard & Poor’s, died Tuesday of complications from cancer at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

O’Neill worked for S&P; in New York for 36 years, including stints as an analyst and managing director in the equities division in the 1970s and 1980s.

He became head of the firm’s ratings business in 1989 and was named president in 1999.

O’Neill was born in Geneva, N.Y., and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Hobart College in 1962.

“Leo was an exceptional leader,” Harold McGraw, chief executive officer of McGraw-Hill, said in a statement.

“His remarkable professional commitment, keen insight and warm personal style will be deeply missed.”
