They’re into the process

Much has been made of Tunde Adebimpe’s vocal similarity to Peter Gabriel, but the 29-year-old lead singer of TV on the Radio shrugs off the comparison. “Better early Peter Gabriel than late Phil Collins,” he says, “but it’s not a conscious thing. I’m sure that as I mature and things happen in my male body, things will change.”

Change, after all, is the one constant with this Brooklyn outfit -- a band that makes “completely process-oriented” music with Fela Kuti beats, falsetto vocals, horns and ominous noise tracking. “The whole point is to see what will happen and not have a plan so far as outcome,” Adebimpe says. “The thing about the band, from the start, we didn’t have allegiance to style. We barely had allegiance to lineup.”

When the group started in 2001, it was a duo -- with Adebimpe “rattling off lyrics over” the multifaceted beat creations of bandmate David Sitek. The group now includes guitarist Kyp Malone and features guest appearances by Yeah Yeah Yeah guitarist Nick Zinner and flutist Martin Perna on their recently released full-length debut, “Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.”

“We’re not sure there’s a right way to make music,” Adebimpe says. “We want to keep going and keep doing as much as possible to keep surprising ourselves.”
