Streaking Castilla Drives Rockies, 4-1
Vinny Castilla was more excited about the timing of his big hit than the record he established.
Castilla set a franchise record with an RBI in his 10th consecutive game, and the Colorado Rockies avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Houston Astros, 4-1, Sunday at Denver.
“I was aware of the record after the last game, so when I did it today I knew I had it,” said Castilla, who was given a day off Saturday. “It was nice, but the most important thing was that the hit came at a time to make the lead 4-1.”
Castilla had two hits and two runs batted in to pass Todd Helton, who drove in a run in nine straight May 6-15, 2001.
Joe Kennedy (3-0) gave up a run and five hits, struck out four and walked two in 6 1/3 innings. It was the second time in his career that he has won three consecutive starts.
Arizona 12, San Diego 7 -- Richie Sexson homered twice and drove in three runs for the Diamondbacks at Phoenix.
Matt Kata drove in four runs with a pair of singles, and Luis Gonzalez and Danny Bautista had two-run doubles for the Diamondbacks, who won their second series this season.
Atlanta 7, Florida 2 -- Mark DeRosa homered for the first earned run off Dontrelle Willis this season, and J.D. Drew’s bases-loaded triple off Tommy Phelps broke a tie in the seventh inning at Miami. Willis departed after six innings with the score 2-2. His earned-run average rose to 0.71. He gave up no earned runs in his first 19 2/3 innings this season.
Pittsburgh 6, Cincinnati 0 -- Oliver Perez shrugged off a nearly three-hour rain delay to shut out Cincinnati on six hits at Pittsburgh.
Perez (2-0) struck out 10 and walked one while lowering his ERA to 1.74.
Chicago 4, New York 1 -- Matt Clement took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and struck out a career-high 13 at Chicago.
The Cubs completed a three-game sweep and have outscored their opponents 39-5 during their six-game winning streak.
Montreal 2, Philadelphia 0 -- Zach Day and Rocky Biddle combined on a shutout at Montreal. The game drew only 8,267 despite a Brad Wilkerson bobblehead promotion.
St. Louis 5, Milwaukee 2 -- Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds hit consecutive home runs in the first inning at Milwaukee.
