Trial Begins in Case of Ex-Tyco Counsel

Jury selection began in the larceny trial of Mark Belnick, Tyco International Ltd.’s former general counsel.
New York state Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Obus stressed to prospective jurors that the case was “completely different and separate” from the case against L. Dennis Kozlowski, Tyco’s former chief executive, and Mark Swartz, Tyco’s former chief financial officer. That case ended in a mistrial this month.
Belnick has been charged with grand larceny, violating New York’s general business law and falsifying business records of loans and bonuses he received while working at Tyco. Belnick faces up to 25 years in prison for the grand-larceny charge. He has denied wrongdoing.
