The Atlanta Braves put outfielder Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a strained right hamstring, the star’s first stint on the DL since 1996.

The move is retroactive to April 19, and Atlanta recalled infielder Mike Hessman from Triple-A Richmond to take Jones’ roster spot.

Jones re-injured his hamstring in a 3-2 win over the Florida Marlins on April 18 while trying to chase down a fly ball in the left-center gap. He had to be taken off the field on a cart. He originally hurt the hamstring April 11 against the Chicago Cubs and sat out two games.

The Braves needed another healthy player because outfielder Eli Marrero had flu and first baseman Julio Franco is already on the disabled list.

The Seattle Mariners designated right-hander Kevin Jarvis for assignment, then waited to see whether they will have to cover his $4.25-million contract.

Jarvis was 1-0 with an 8.31 earned-run average in eight relief appearances this season.

The Mariners recalled left-hander Matt Thornton from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners have 10 days to decide whether to send Jarvis to the minors, but he has enough service time to block that move. The team’s alternatives are to trade or release him.
