UCLA Swept Away Again by Long Beach State

Long Beach State continued its dominance this season over UCLA to clinch a spot in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball final with a three-game victory at Provo, Utah, on Thursday night.

The 49ers (27-5), who had swept UCLA twice earlier this season, did it again, 30-25, 30-27, 30-28, to beat the Bruins (24-6) in a tournament semifinal match.

Second-ranked Long Beach State will play top-ranked Brigham Young, a winner in five games over Pepperdine, in the tournament final Saturday.

Scott Towzinsky led the 49ers with 14 kills, including two to close out the second game. David Lee and Jeff Wooten had 13 apiece, with Wooten getting seven in the first game.

The match ended when UCLA’s Kris Kraushaar hit a jump serve long.

Marcin Jacoda led the Bruins with 11 kills.

In the first semifinal, BYU outlasted Pepperdine, 30-27, 27-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-12.

BYU (26-4) was led by Fernando Pessoa with 20 kills.

Sean Rooney had 24 kills for Pepperdine (19-9).
