More Inking Than Thinking
There wasn’t much new for pundits to ponder during last week’s Democratic convention. The script was rigid, the talking points honed to bumper-sticker brevity: War hero. Positively no negativity. Protest unwelcome. Security tight. Democrats unite. Nader spoils. Edwards emerges. Above all, find the elusive middle at the FleetCenter.
With such ready-made topics, it was tempting for cartoonists to do more inking than thinking. Of course, we kept hoping for one of the prime-time players to stray off message. When one did, before you could say “shove it,” another 50 cartoons were born.
Still, I liked Jack Ohman’s historical perspective on protest, Dan Wasserman’s timely pounce on Teresa’s misstep, and Kevin Kallaugher’s apparition above the apparatchiks.
As for my own effort on Kerry, I confess to inside-the-four-boxes thinking. Oh, well, just one month to the GOP in NYC. Help is on the way.
