David Haight, 97, eldest member of a leadership group in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Saturday in Salt Lake City of natural causes.

At 69, Haight was named to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a part of the top leadership of the Mormon church. He had worked for the church for most of his life, including overseeing its global missionary effort and working on the public affairs board with outreach to other faiths.

Haight, who served as a Navy commander during World War II, went into politics early in his career. He served as mayor of Palo Alto in the 1950s. But he resigned that position to serve the Mormon church.
