Bruins Dismiss Receiver

Idris Moss, a sophomore wide receiver, was kicked off the UCLA football team Monday for breaking numerous athletic department rules.

Moss had a chance to start this fall after a strong spring, but his scholarship was revoked after the undisclosed violations.

“Sure, I’m a little disappointed about the school’s decision but I understand,” said Moss, who will complete his final week of summer school at UCLA on Friday. “I can’t talk about what happened, but once it did happen, it was out of my hands and the university took the necessary steps.

“All I can say is that my grades are cool, and I should be able to transfer to somewhere else.... What happened, had nothing to do with any legal issues.”

Federal laws regarding student privacy prevent UCLA from releasing details of Moss’ violations.

“This is an unfortunate circumstance for this young man,” UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said, “but all of our student-athletes know they are expected to follow the policies of our department.”

Moss, a former Rialto Eisenhower High standout, had four catches for 92 yards in 2003 and was chosen the most improved player among wide receivers at the end of spring practice.

With the start of training camp less than two weeks away, Moss’ departure is a tough blow for the Bruins’ passing game. Moss was expected to play a key role in UCLA’s three wideout sets and was considered in the running, along with Junior Taylor and Joe Cowan, to start at split end opposite senior All-American candidate Craig Bragg.

“We certainly wish Idris well in his future,” said Coach Karl Dorrell about Moss, who redshirted in 2002. “He made some mistakes and has paid a severe price. Hopefully, he will learn from this and be successful elsewhere.”
