Group to Urge New Standard for Wireless

A group of technology companies including Dallas-based Texas Instruments Inc., Geneva-based STMicroelectronics and Irvine-based Broadcom Corp., said Thursday that it would propose a new wireless networking standard up to 10 times the speed of the current generation.

The group said it was submitting a plan for a new standard for a short-range wireless networking technology known as WiFi, which is used in airports and coffee shops to access the Web.

The group, calling itself WWiSE, said its version of an 802.11n standard would be compatible with the technology currently in use. Its technology could operate at speeds up to 540 megabits per second.

The group said it planned to submit its proposal to the task force at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers charged with developing an 802.11n standard.
