School District Forced to Find New Building Site

The Richfield School District in Tehama County expects to lose at least $1 million because it has to find a new site to build a school that’s already under construction.

The school broke ground earlier this year on a gymnasium, but it was within 15,000 feet of an underground Pacific Gas and Electric Co. pipeline, which violates building codes for schools.

School officials have found a new site about a mile away, said Todd Brose, Richfield’s new superintendent and principal.

“We have been assured we well be reimbursed, but that is still taxpayers’ money,” said Brose. “I think the important thing was that the district avoided losing more by stopping construction when they did.”
