Parlor finds a home of its own

The nomadic comedy and cabaret series Parlor Performances, which features a revolving roster of veteran satirists, singers, songwriters and musicians -- among them Dave Frishberg, Mort Sahl, Dale Gonyea and Paul Krassner -- has made its way through an eclectic array of venues since its inception in 1990.

It spent 10 years in private living rooms from Silver Lake to Santa Monica and more recently has performed in such spaces as the Beverly Hills Public Library and the University of Judaism. Its current show, “Roy Zimmerman’s Patriot Act,” is at the San Gennaro Cafe in Culver City.

This fall, however, the series, created and produced by Jeannine Frank, will have its first permanent home: Fields Piano in West L.A. Beginning Oct. 1, Fields will host Parlor Performances on Friday nights in the store’s 100-seat Steinway Hall. “It’s a great opportunity for us,” says Douglas Miller, director of Steinway Concert Artists.

Frank, who has also committed to a seven-week series of politically themed Tuesday night shows at Magicopolis in Santa Monica during September and October, is looking forward to having a home base.

“It’s about time to settle down,” she says. “I broke both feet over the years, schlepping chairs into my station wagon and moving furniture.”
