Beijing Has Tough Message for Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama may return to his homeland only if he renounces aspirations for Tibetan independence, and any talks may be held only with his personal representative, a senior Chinese official said.
The tough words from Xiao Bai, deputy mayor of the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, signaled that tentative, behind-the-scenes contacts between envoys of Tibet’s exiled god-king and China might have broken down.
After a 10-year break, dialogue between Beijing and the Dalai Lama had revived in the last 18 months.
