Little League’s Big Problem Is Playing Time

Re “Little League Losing Its Grip on Kids,” Little League is losing its grip not only on America’s youth but also on the parents who grew up playing Little League ball, because minimum playing time is two times in the outfield and one time at bat. This makes for an experience with no exercise and is destructive to self-esteem.

When my son was denied his one time at bat he closed the door on Little League ball. He is playing AYSO soccer half a mile from the Little League field that I grew up on. The minimum playing time is three-fourths of the game, and he is not just standing around in the outfield. Our family’s “field of dreams” is now a soccer field.

Little League needs to get with the program and require three-fourths playing time for each player. It is not too late for a great American tradition to recapture America’s youth and parents.
