Greene Tries for 100 Repeat

Here, in capsule form, are the events that will be highlighted today in Athens:

Track and Field

The world’s fastest man and best female distance runner will be crowned.

In the men’s 100-meter dash, defending gold medalist Maurice Greene has a season-best mark of 9.91, second only to Shawn Crawford’s 9.88.

In the women’s marathon, Britain’s Paula Radcliffe, the world-record holder, is the favorite, but Margaret Okayo, Catherine Ndereba and Alice Chelangat of Kenya should also contend.

Also today: the first round and quarterfinals of the men’s 100-meter hurdles, semifinals of the men’s 400 and 1,500 and finals in the hammer throw, high jump and triple jump.

Gymnastics

Competition resumes at Olympic Indoor Hall with event finals on three men’s apparatus and two women’s apparatus.

In men’s floor exercise, twins Paul and Morgan Hamm from Waukesha, Wis., have a chance to medal. Paul, winner of the individual event all-around gold medal, qualified in four event finals, two more than any other man.

Courtney Kupets, who has been struggling with a sore right hamstring, and Terin Humphrey will represent the U.S. on the uneven bars. Annia Hatch has a chance to take an individual medal on the vault.

Men’s Tennis

Mardy Fish, 22, of Tampa, Fla., plays 10th-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile for the gold medal. Neither Fish, whose biggest fan and Olympic roommate is Andy Roddick, nor Massu have played past the third round of a major tournament.

Women’s Wrestling

Fifty women will take part in the inaugural event, including four from the United States: Patricia Miranda (105.5 pounds), Tela O’Donnell (121), Sara McMann (138.75) and Toccara Montgomery (158.5).
