Hard Work and Focus Earn Students Privileges

Share

I was extremely disturbed by a statement in the Aug. 19 article “Teen Film Students Caught in Freeze Frame”:

“Other teachers and district officials charge that [Steve] Bachrach [a film teacher at Jefferson High School in South Los Angeles] cherry-picked his students. The film academy has too many of the school’s highest-achieving students, they say. They question whether the academy would create a privileged learning experience for a few.”

It is mind-numbing to think that administrators and teachers are so averse to providing high-performing kids with priority access to a special academic program.

Since when are the results of hard work and focus considered an unfair privilege? What a horrifying message to send to those who will run our country and take care of us in our old age.
