Police Break Up Protests in Tribal Land Dispute

From Times Wire Reports

Police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of Masai tribesmen who were calling for the Kenyan government to give them ancestral land acquired by colonialists 100 years ago.

The protest campaign, which began Aug. 13, has brought demonstrations in central Kenya and Nairobi, as well as attempts to invade at least one privately owned ranch. Protesters say one person has been shot to death and more than 100 have been arrested.

Lands Minister Amos Kimunya said the protesters were being used by “some selfish people for some selfish gains.”
