Billions Still Lack Basic Sanitation, U.N. Says

More than 1 billion people drink unsafe water and more than 2.6 billion, about 40% of the world’s population, have no access to basic sanitation, United Nations agencies said.
The World Health Organization and UNICEF said in a report that children were particularly vulnerable to resulting illnesses. Diarrhea kills about 1.8 million people each year, mostly children younger than 5, they said.
