At Least Kela Has His Health

Share

Kela was supposed to run in the Cigar Mile, a Grade I, at Aqueduct eight days ago but was scratched because of illness the morning of the race.

Apparently, the 6-year-old Numerous horse is a quick healer. Supplemented by owner Jay Manoogian for $2,000, Kela is scheduled to start against seven other sprinters in today’s $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood at Hollywood Park.

A Grade III at six furlongs, the Underwood also lured My Cousin Matt, My Master, Taste Of Paradise, Our New Recruit, Watchem Smokey, Newark and Star Cross.

Three of the participants competed in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Oct. 30. Kela finished second at 4-1, My Cousin Matt was third at 60-1 and Our New Recruit finished 12th of 13 at nearly 9-1.

Race of the day: Pelham Bay, an easy winner of the Maid Of The Mist on Oct. 23 at Belmont Park, heads a field of seven New York-bred 2-year-old fillies in today’s $75,000 East View at Aqueduct. Shaun Bridgmohan will ride the daughter of Smart Strike for owner Evelyn Pollard and trainer Patrick Kelly in the 1 1/16 -mile race.

One for the road: Risky Weather switches to the main track, his preferred surface, and should get a quick pace to chase as he surfaces in today’s second at Golden Gate Fields. A winner of two of seven starts on dirt, Risky Weather will be ridden by David Lopez in the $30,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Best In The Storm, the Lakerette entry and Lori M’love in the second, Prelude To Puddles in the third and Green Queen, Cottonuous Peaks, Skippadoo and Queen Of Soul in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/65. Money: Previous day/meet total: $18.40/$371. Total money bet: $410.
