Lack of food and education still afflict millions of children around the world, with nearly 10 million youngsters under age 5 dying each year from diseases such as diarrhea and measles, the U.N. children’s agency said.

UNICEF chief Carol Bellamy underlined the challenges of improving health care for children as she opened an international conference in Islamabad, Pakistan, to encourage people to volunteer at aid agencies and in government programs.

More than 170 million children globally remain malnourished, and more than 120 million, mostly girls, “never see the inside of a school,” she said.
