Testifying before a parliamentary committee, Spain’s prime minister said his predecessor’s government had erased computer records after the March 11 train bombings, when officials were blaming Basque separatists despite mounting evidence of a link to Islamic extremists.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said aides found that all records of Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar’s crisis meetings and government communications in the days after the attacks had been erased from computers at Aznar’s office complex.

“There was not a single piece of paper,” Zapatero said. “They left us the bill.” The newspaper El Pais said a computer company charged $15,000 to wipe out the records.
