Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Indiana
A single-engine airplane lost power and made an emergency landing Tuesday in the middle of a bustling business district, knocking over a utility pole and nearly colliding with traffic.
The pilot, co-pilot and three passengers were not injured when the plane landed safely on a four-lane highway lined with fast-food restaurants, gas stations and motels. The 12-seat plane came to a rest in front of a Howard Johnson motel and a pizza restaurant.
“He did a great job of putting it down,” said Roseland Police Chief Mike Swanson. “A couple of cars got close. He was just a couple of feet over them.”
The end of the right wing was sheared off when it struck the utility pole. The highway was closed while emergency crews cleaned up fuel that spilled.
About 600 customers in Roseland and around the nearby University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend were without power, a utility spokesman said.
The airplane was headed to White Plains, N.Y., and had just taken off from South Bend Regional Airport when it reported engine problems.
The plane is a Pilatus PC-12, which can carry up to 12 passengers.
