Police Fail to Implement Reforms, Monitors Say
The Oakland Police Department has failed to fulfill reforms spelled out in a consent decree, according to a report by an independent monitoring team.
Police were ordered to make several changes as part of a February 2003 civil settlement by the city and the department with 119 plaintiffs stemming from the “Riders” case, which involved alleged rogue cops.
A report issued Monday found that the department did not complete half of the changes it was directed to make by court order. Mayor Jerry Brown said there was no excuse for the missed deadlines and ordered command staff to complete 20 of the mandated tasks by Jan. 15.
