Glenn Is Glad for Wyoming’s Extra Practice

Wyoming Coach Joe Glenn is coaching in his first bowl game, but he’s no stranger to coaching in the postseason.

He won three national championships in his 19 seasons as a coach at the Division I-AA and Division II levels, where they settle titles with a playoff.

“It’s similar but different because it’s not sudden death,” said Glenn when asked to compare preparing for a bowl game with a postseason playoff.

“One year we played 16 games, back to back to back to back, and that takes a lot out of you. When you have time like we had now where our guys were taking finals, we got work in but we did not have to play four games.”

Like UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell, Glenn opted to use the extra practice time for the bowl to work on his players, instead of overemphasizing a game plan for tonight.

“There are a lot of similarities with the programs,” Dorrell said. “Both [coaches] are in their second year with their programs, and both had low expectations from the media standpoint going into this football season.”

Wyoming quarterback Corey Bramlet accounted for 14 touchdowns this season, 10 passing and four rushing, and his versatility worries Dorrell.

“We played against some very good quarterbacks, with the Heisman Trophy winner and all of those different ones,” Dorrell said. “But he has a style of his own. They run the ball with him. I don’t think anybody in our conference runs the ball [with the quarterback] like that, so there’s no one I can really compare him with.”

Defensive tackle C.J. Niusulu, who had been hampered because of swelling in his lower leg, is expected to play tonight. Dorrell said senior wide receiver Tab Perry, who suffered a right ankle injury in practice Tuesday, will be a game-time decision.
