From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Every time an Oakland police officer pulls someone over, cameras could be rolling in order to help the city avoid costly lawsuits and boost public confidence in the department.

Officials want to install cameras in some of its 180 police cars this year. The City Council will consider the idea tonight.

The city paid out more than $10.5 million last year to settle lawsuits in the so-called Riders case, in which four police officers were accused of beating suspects, planting drugs and lying to cover up their tracks.
