Yucca Street’s got its own vibe

Share

No one would confuse Yucca with Beverly or Melrose, but the small stretch in Hollywood between Vine and Ivar has some pretty serious street credibility. It was here, in the shadow of the Capitol Records Building, that Sofia Coppola launched her late-20th century clothing line, Milk Fed, and although she has moved on to bigger and better things, Yucca still maintains a cutting-edge pedigree. Clothing designer Claire Joseph has an atelier at 6322 Yucca, (323) 461-7911, filled with funky furniture she won’t part with -- curses -- and great vintage fabrics that she will let go. Otto Design Group, the interior designers for Urban Outfitters and other retailers, (323) 461-3409, maintains the Four X Four art gallery in the front of their offices at 6324 Yucca, and operates Four X Four, the Store, with apparel and housewares designed by young California artists, down the street at 6316 Yucca, (323) 461-4440. For home decor shoppers, the centerpiece is Lost & Found, Etc, at 6320 Yucca, (323) 856-5872. Owner Jamie Rosenthal’s “bohemian chic” philosophy embraces colorful Vuittonesque wool throws direct from the mills in Scotland, $225; wide Florence Knoll-styled chairs custom upholstered in purple and pink ikat cotton, $2,500; and towels in dazzling stripes and florals (from $12 for a wash mitt to $110 for a bath sheet), as well as a satiny cotton-viscose bathmat studded with nonskid dots. Want crewel throw rugs and table runners, Alexander Girard fabric dolls or candles formed under water? Ask Rosenthal. “Anything modern in my store,” she says, “has to have an organic feeling.”
