Indie ‘fraud’

Share

Thanks to Manohla Dargis for her expose on independent films, “The Indie Eye” (Feb. 1). I only have one complaint. You missed the fact that the people who perpetuate “the great fraud” more than anyone ... are actually people like me: indie filmmakers.

By buying into BWS (Blair Witch Psychosis) -- a belief that a $50,000 indie film will out-gross the next “Spider-Man” sequel) -- many of us are making the kind of picture we think everyone will want to see, instead of telling the stories we’re obsessed with, regardless of their commercial appeal. We, the indie filmmakers, need to get back to being independent, instead of courting Hollywood megabucks. Until this happens, I’m sorry to say that your Sundance experiences will only get worse.
