Glover has Coltrane tribute show on tap at Cinespace

Tap phenomenon Savion Glover will honor jazz legend John Coltrane in an improvisational show, “If Trane Wuz Here,” at Cinespace in Hollywood on Feb. 27 and 28.

The production, to also feature poet Reg E. Gaines and saxophonist Matana Roberts, was first seen at the Knitting Factory in New York in July 2003. Though the Cinespace shows will be different, each is likely to include performances of “A Love Supreme” and “My Favorite Things,” among other Coltrane standards.

The Tony-winning Glover was the choreographer-star of the Broadway hit “Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk,” which played the Ahmanson in January 2003. His other credits include dancing opposite his mentor, Gregory Hines, in “Jelly’s Last Jam” and appearing in Spike Lee’s film “Bamboozled.”

Gaines is a two-time Tony nominee for writing the book and lyrics for “Bring in ‘Da Noise.” He was also nominated for a spoken-word Grammy for the CD “Please Don’t Take My Air Jordans.” Roberts, a Chicago native who has collaborated with bassist Josh Abrams and drummer-percussionist Chad Taylor, lives in New York City.

Coltrane was an enormously gifted and influential saxophonist who died in 1967. He had played in the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk.
