A three-mile stretch of California 116 is on track for a $34-million improvement project to widen, straighten and level a segment of the narrow two-lane road between Sonoma and Petaluma.
Despite delays to road projects up and down the state, Caltrans announced last week that the Stage Gulch Road project has been given top priority on a regional list of transportation projects.
The action, revealed at a meeting of the Sonoma County Transportation Authority, follows 10 traffic deaths on the rural road in the last four years.
