‘Cookin’ gets NAACP honor

The reach of the NAACP Theatre Awards extended into San Diego this year as the award for best production with an Equity contract went to “Cookin’ at the Cookery” at San Diego Repertory Theatre.
In a ceremony at the International Cultural Center on Monday, “Cookin’” received four awards, as did “Gem of the Ocean” and “North on South Central Avenue.”
“Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife” won the award for best production on the sub-100-seat level. Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad, who are sisters, received a lifetime achievement award. Melba Moore won the “Trailblazer Award” and Fayard Nicholas the “Spirit Award.”
