Lockyer Is Acting on Mercury Warnings

Share

Re “Act Fast on Mercury,” editorial, Feb. 16: My office has aggressively enforced Proposition 65’s requirement that consumers be warned about exposure to mercury. Last year, we sued seven major grocery chains for failing to post at their fish counters warnings about mercury in fresh shark, swordfish and tuna. Grocers posted the warnings referenced in your editorial as a direct result of my office’s enforcement action, which remains pending. We filed a similar complaint against 15 restaurant chains.

The warning now posted by grocers addresses canned tuna, but not well enough. Using revised Food and Drug Administration guidelines as a benchmark, my office will work with supermarkets and other interested parties to ensure grocery shoppers are provided effective, responsible advice about the mercury exposure associated with consuming canned tuna.
