Bay Area Begins New Year With 7 Homicides

The San Francisco Bay Area’s first weekend of the year was violent, with six shootings and one stabbing that left seven people dead in Oakland, San Jose and Vallejo.

Four homicides were reported in Oakland during the weekend.

Police said Marcus Lynn Brown Jr., 20, was fatally shot in West Oakland on Friday night, the city’s first homicide of 2004. Two more men died, one from stab wounds, on Sunday, and a fourth man died early Monday morning.

Oakland had 114 homicides last year.

Police said two 17-year-old boys, identified as Miguel Romero and Diego Gutierrez, both of San Jose, died during a gang fight Saturday night at a Jack in the Box restaurant in East San Jose.

San Jose had 31 homicides last year.

In Vallejo, five people were shot during the weekend in three incidents. One shooting was fatal.

Jonathan Leddy, 19, of Vallejo died Saturday after he was found bleeding from a single bullet wound.
