A representative of the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq will attend a Jan. 19 meeting with the United Nations and the Iraqi Governing Council on determining the U.N. role as the country moves to self-government, officials said.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said he expected the United States to send a “senior delegation.” Annan wants to clarify what role the authority and the Governing Council want the U.N. to play before an Iraqi transitional government assumes power.
