Wrestler’s Memory Honored

Share

The wrestling team at Orange El Modena presented a letterman’s jacket to the family of slain team captain Diego Gonzalez Wednesday night in a brief, emotional ceremony preceding a Century League match against Placentia El Dorado.

Gonzalez, the team’s top returning wrestler, was shot and killed Nov. 10. Two suspects are in custody.

About two dozen family members surrounded parents Maria Sanchez and Felix Gonzalez Dominguez as Coach Alan Clinton placed the jacket on the shoulders of Sanchez, who was in tears. The family walked off to a standing ovation from spectators who nearly filled the gymnasium.

Clinton said Gonzalez had been saving to purchase the jacket.

Water Polo

Adam Hewko of Anaheim Servite, named the player of the year by the Los Angeles Times last fall, has committed to Pepperdine, choosing to play water polo instead of competing in swimming.

Hewko was the Southern Section Division II co-player of the year his junior and senior seasons but also had success in swimming, winning five section titles in three events. His most recent titles came last spring in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

He had 74 goals and 69 assists for the Friars’ water polo team last season.

Signing day is Feb. 4.

Girls’ Soccer

In San Clemente’s 5-0 victory over host Mission Viejo Tuesday, the Tritons showed why they are defending Southern Section Division I co-champions, are ranked No. 1 by The Times and were unbeatable at last month’s Santa Ana Foothill Excalibur tournament.

South Coast league rival Mission Viejo (5-6-2, 1-1 in league) demonstrated it isn’t nearly the same team that shared the section title with the Tritons last spring. Returning only five starters, the Diablos were overwhelmed by San Clemente (9-2-4, 1-0-1).

“They showed a lot of poise and experience,” Mission Viejo Coach Susie Daher said. “We were a little shell-shocked.”

With her team trailing by three goals at halftime, Daher removed freshman goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler and brought in senior Lindze Boesen, but neither had much success.

San Clemente senior Kiley Jones had two goals and one assist, and Chelsea Card, Blake Zerboni and Tanya Emerson each added a goal.

Goalkeepers Shayla and Jenna Sabin had a combined three saves in their shutout.
