“Cold Mountain,” starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, will open next month’s annual Berlin International Film Festival, which will feature 12 world premieres in a politically accented program, organizers announced Thursday.

Contenders for the Golden Bear top prize will include “Country of My Skull,” director John Boorman’s look at South Africa’s national reconciliation efforts after apartheid; “Triple Agent,” set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War by French veteran Eric Rohmer; and “Trilogy: The Earth Is Crying,” an epic by Greek director Theo Angelopoulos about his homeland.

“Cold Mountain” isn’t competing for a prize at the Feb. 5-15 Berlin festival, which traditionally opens the annual circuit of major European film fests.
