Ventura County’s health-care agency has obtained additional doses of the flu vaccine and will make them available at the county’s five clinics.

Although the peak of the flu season appears to be over, the county’s public health officer recommended that those considered high-risk still get the vaccine.

Several hundred doses of the two types of vaccines were given to the county by the state and have been divided among the clinics.

The preservative-free vaccine is available to any child 6 months to 2 years old.

The regular vaccine will be available only to adults considered high-risk. High-risk residents are those 65 and older, pregnant women in their second or third trimester and those with chronic medical problems, including diabetes or asthma.

The flu season began early this year. After the illness was blamed in the deaths of several children, supplies of the vaccine ran short.

Because doctors are not mandated to report the disease, there are no confirmed numbers, said Dr. Robert Levin, Ventura County’s public health officer.

The shots cost $15. The clinics are in Oxnard, 385-8652; north Oxnard, 981-5221; Ventura, 652-5928; Simi Valley, 578-3675; and Santa Paula, 933-5505.
