Possible Reuse of Sewage Water to Be Studied
San Diego water customers will finance a $900,000 study on using highly treated sewage water for drinking, irrigating the central part of the city and other environmental uses, the City Council voted this week.
The one-year study will settle a lawsuit brought by three environmental groups accusing the city of dumping 170 million gallons of inadequately treated sewage per day into the ocean.
BayKeeper, Surfrider Foundation and the Sierra Club requested the study, which also will investigate the plausibility of funneling wastewater into local streams to develop wetlands.
The San Diego Water Department already has earmarked half of the study’s cost.
The remaining $450,000 will come from the department’s reserve fund.
