In This Stakes, Frankel Has Nothing To Lose

Unbeaten in four starts on the turf for trainers Chuck Simon and Wayne Lukas, Nothing To Lose will try to remain that way for new trainer Bobby Frankel in today’s $150,000 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita.

A Grade II at 1 1/4 miles on the turf, the San Marcos will be the first start for the 4-year-old Sky Classic colt since he won the Palm Beach Handicap Feb. 21 at Gulfstream Park.

Owned and bred by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Nothing To Lose won his career debut as a 2-year-old for Simon at 15-1, finished fourth in consecutive starts on the main track after being transferred to Lukas, then won an allowance race and the Tropical Park Derby at Calder before the Palm Beach success.

Jerry Bailey will ride Nothing To Lose and the fact he won his first start going 1 1/6 miles at Saratoga suggests the layoff won’t be a problem.

Frankel is also scheduled to saddle Blue Steller against a field that includes the Kristin Mulhall-trained entry of Californian and Puerto Banus, Gene de Campeao, Hecandigit, Sharbayan, Fairly Ransom and Sweet Return, who hasn’t run since his wire-to-wire upset in the Hollywood Derby on Nov. 30.

The other stakes on the card is the $150,000 Santa Ynez, a Grade II at seven furlongs for 3-year-old fillies.
