18 Kashmir Separatists Freed After Talks
The government in the Indian-held part of Kashmir released 18 political prisoners in the strife-torn Himalayan region and promised to free more soon as a peace overture, the Press Trust of India news agency said.
Saturday’s release came two days after talks between moderate Kashmiri separatist leaders and Indian Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani aimed at ending the insurgency in the region.
The release of detainees was a key demand of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Kashmir’s most prominent separatist group.
