After beating back a proposal that would have eliminated the agency, the Mexican government’s film financing body has received $13.6 million to underwrite movies this year, the Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

Mexican President Vicente Fox last year called for closing the agency, Imcine, but the idea was vigorously opposed by filmmakers, who said government support had helped reinvigorate the industry. Mexico’s Congress subsequently dropped the proposal from budget considerations, clearing the way for further federal funds.
