Pakistan and India said they would hold their first peace talks in 2 1/2 years next month in Islamabad on issues that include their competing claims to the Kashmir region.

The announcement of the Feb. 16-18 talks, made simultaneously in Islamabad and New Delhi, came as the leading Muslim cleric in Kashmir urged an end to fighting between Indian forces and separatist militants.

Speaking in New Delhi, cleric Umar Farooq voiced optimism that a cease-fire would come.
