Democratic Candidates Separated by Iraq War

I beg to differ with John Kerry’s spokeswoman, who stated that “voters are tired of these same old angry attacks” (Jan. 25). Millions of us Democrats are still angry. We are angry that more than 500 American soldiers have died in this unnecessary and illegal war in Iraq. We are angry that billions are being spent on this war and its aftermath, and we are angry at Kerry, Joe Lieberman and John Edwards, who helped make this war happen. Give ‘em hell, Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich!

The picture of the Saigon presidential palace, constructed under “then-Premier Nguyen Cao Ky” (Jan. 24), brought to mind my visit to that facility a few years ago: The occasion was the festive end of a marathon bike race from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City between U.S. and Vietnamese war veterans. One of the participants was a tall, lean biker, Kerry. Sweaty and tired, he addressed us on the front steps of the palace. He was charismatic, intelligent and artful. I have been a fan ever since.

“Politics No Mere Elective at This School” (Jan. 22), on the students at Concord High School in New Hampshire, was very gratifying. It is good to know that these high school students are making an effort to learn about the issues facing this country. Perhaps we should take a lesson from them.

The students at Concord High School, many of whom cannot yet vote, care deeply about who will be the next leader of this country. Those of us who are allowed the right to choose our next leader should care at least as much and should improve upon the miserable voter turnout level the country experienced at the last presidential election.
