Microsoft Corp. said the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office may come to its rescue and cancel a patent that could force the company to reconfigure its most popular product.

Microsoft, of Redmond, Wash., said it was suspending plans to make changes to its Windows operating system and Internet Explorer Web browser.

The company had previously said it would make the changes in response to a $521-million verdict that found some components of those programs infringe technology owned by Eolas Technologies Inc.

The judge in the case barred Microsoft from shipping more infringing copies of the software, but stayed that ruling while the matter is on appeal.
